The 3rd Middlesex battalion did not arrive back in England from India until the end of 1914 where they joined 85 Brigade of 28th Division. They went to France on 19th January, 1915 and spent the rest of that month training at Flêtre before moving to Ypres on 4th February. There is therefore some difficulty in explaining the death of Alfred Bartley, who, according to records, was killed on 27th January and who is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial in Ypres to the missing. Either the date was recorded incorrectly or else he was temporarily serving with another unit at the time. |
